Overview

Power BI Desktop is a free, feature-rich business intelligence application by Microsoft. It allows users to connect to data sources, transform data, build interactive visualisations, and share reports. It is used in our Data Analysis & Management course for building dashboards and business reports.

How to Install & Use

  1. Download Power BI Desktop from the Microsoft Download Center (link below) or from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Run the .msi installer and follow the prompts.
  3. Launch Power BI Desktop — you can use it without signing in for most features.
  4. Sign in with a Microsoft account to publish reports to the Power BI Service.
  5. Click Get Data to connect to your first data source.

Limitations & Notes

  • Power BI Desktop is Windows-only — Mac users must use the Power BI web browser version.
  • Free version limits cloud sharing — a Power BI Pro licence is required for full collaboration.
  • Large datasets (millions of rows) may require Premium capacity for optimal performance.
  • Import mode loads data into memory — very large models may strain RAM.
