Overview
Power BI Desktop is a free, feature-rich business intelligence application by Microsoft. It allows users to connect to data sources, transform data, build interactive visualisations, and share reports. It is used in our Data Analysis & Management course for building dashboards and business reports.

How to Install & Use
- Download Power BI Desktop from the Microsoft Download Center (link below) or from the Microsoft Store.
- Run the .msi installer and follow the prompts.
- Launch Power BI Desktop — you can use it without signing in for most features.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account to publish reports to the Power BI Service.
- Click Get Data to connect to your first data source.
Limitations & Notes
- Power BI Desktop is Windows-only — Mac users must use the Power BI web browser version.
- Free version limits cloud sharing — a Power BI Pro licence is required for full collaboration.
- Large datasets (millions of rows) may require Premium capacity for optimal performance.
- Import mode loads data into memory — very large models may strain RAM.
